Our review process
How we review and recommend
This page explains exactly how Shopicks chooses the products it recommends, including what we do not do. We would rather be precise about our methods than overstate them.
Independent
Recommendations are not determined by affiliate commission rates. Products earn their place on merit.
Research-led
We evaluate specifications, manufacturer information, reputable sources, value and intended use.
Made for UK shoppers
Advice reflects UK availability, UK retailers and everyday UK use.
Clear and practical
We explain who a product suits, where it compromises and which alternatives to consider.
Research and hands-on testing
Every product recommendation on Shopicks is labelled with the method used to assess it.
Research-based assessment
Our assessment is based on product specifications, manufacturer information, market research and comparison with competing products.
At present, this is how all of our recommendations are made. Research-based pages never say that we tested, used or measured a product.
Hands-on assessment
Used only when a product has genuinely been tested. Hands-on assessments state who tested the product, for how long and in what setting. We do not currently operate a testing lab, and we will not imply otherwise.
How products are shortlisted
We start with the products that are widely available to UK shoppers in a category, then narrow the list by the features that matter most for typical UK homes. We look across price points so that each guide includes sensible options for different budgets.
Our research process
- Reading manufacturer specifications, manuals and warranty terms.
- Checking manufacturer claims against independent and reputable published sources where they exist.
- Comparing each product with its closest competitors on the specifications that matter.
- Noting where claims are unclear, untested or measured under conditions that differ from typical home use.
What we evaluate
- Specifications: capacity, dimensions, power and features, explained in plain English.
- Use-case fit: who the product suits, and who should look elsewhere.
- Value: what you get for the money compared with alternatives, based on typical UK pricing at the time of research. We do not publish live prices.
- Compromises: every product has drawbacks, and we say what they are.
- Practicalities: size, storage, noise, cleaning and running costs where these can be reliably established.
Health & Beauty picks
Health & Beauty listings follow the same research-based approach. We choose widely available, mainstream UK brands and read the product details and manufacturer claims. Each pick carries one honest verdict plus advantages and drawbacks, and we say where a claim is unclear. We do not list prescription or pharmacy-only medicines, we keep health wording modest and make no medical claims, and the information is general only, not medical advice. Listings show no prices or ratings: use the link to check the current price on Amazon.co.uk.
Affiliate links and editorial independence
Shopicks earns a commission when readers buy through some links to Amazon.co.uk, as a participant in the Amazon Associates Programme. Commission rates play no part in which products we recommend or how we rank them, and no brand can pay for a recommendation. Pages with affiliate links carry a clear disclosure before the first link. Read our full affiliate disclosure.
We do not copy retailer reviews or star ratings, and we do not show prices or stock information that we cannot keep accurate.
How we keep guides up to date
Products change, are discontinued and are replaced. Published guides show when they were last reviewed. When a recommended product changes significantly or becomes unavailable, we update or replace the recommendation.
